A major demonstration project has been completed at Dunglass Island on the River Conon to improve spawning habitat for salmon and restore biodiversity in an old river channel.

The first of its kind in Scotland, the scheme involved the removal of dense plantation woodland and the recreation of an old river channel to restore the flow of water through the island. And around 400 tonnes of cobbles has been repositioned to create spawning habitat for salmon.

Scottish Natural Heritage Area officer, Simon Cohen, said the scheme has already seen considerable improvements. He added: "This demonstration project was the first of its kind in Scotland to create new salmon habitat in the lower reaches of the river. The restoration of the natural biodiversity is at the heart of modern conservation effort in Scotland."

Andrew Matheson of Brahan Estate said: "As a member of the Local Biodiversity Action Plan group I know how important it is show that wildlife can co-exist with important commercial activities like salmon fishing, farming and recreation."

The £38,000 project is a joint initiative between, Conon District Salmon Fishery Board, Brahan Estates Scottish Natural Heritage, The Highland Council, Ross and Cromarty Enterprise and LEADER+.
