Here are some examples of how GTBS helped businesses reduce costs.
Bronze Award
- A Tayside hotel fitted a urinal controller saving over £ 100 per year in water costs, with a payback of 2 years.
- A Highland self-catering business established a wildlife meadow in their grounds. This reduced grass cutting in this area to only twice a year, saving £ 150 per year in maintenance costs.
Silver Award
- A compactor reduced waste costs for a hotel in Lochalsh by £ 3000 per year.
- Installing sodium external lighting reduced the energy bill of an Ayrshire hotel by £ 500 per year.
- A hotel in Aberdeenshire switched to recycled printer cartridges. At almost half the original price, the hotel saves £ 200 per year.
Gold Award
- A 9 bedroom hotel on Speyside has reduced its waste bill by £ 400 per year by recycling and re-using as much as possible, avoiding packaging by bulk purchase and returning cardboard boxes to suppliers .
- A city centre B & B purchased an A rated freezer, reducing their energy costs by £50 per year.
Green Innovation
The Green Tourism Business Scheme encourages innovative ideas for good environmental management by awarding Bonus Points. Here are some examples:
- The Golf View Hotel in Nairn uses a refurbished electric milk float to transport linen to its sister hotel.
- Tulloch Lodges, a self-catering business in Forres have established a nature reserve in their grounds.
- Pinewood Restaurant with Rooms in Spean Bridge have installed a reedbed treatment system to clean their waste water.
- In Poolewe, the Pool House Hotel is experimenting with an Eco-Flow device to increase fuel efficiency.
- The Lochalsh Hotel, Gleneagles Hotel, The Queens Hotel and The Lovat Hotel (Perth) all use mechanical compactors to reduce the volume of their waste. This has proven very cost effective and substantially reduced their waste bills.
- Several establishments are operating a total no-smoking policy which has given them bonus points for the reduction of cleaning and decorating that is required.
- Several Green Tourism Business Scheme members have achieved considerable results in home grown produce often in difficult climatic and soil conditions. These include Loch Torridon Hotel, Dunain Park (Inverness) and Glenmachrie (Islay).
