Orkney Island Holidays
Discover the magic of Orkney.....

Orkney Island Holidays group

Orkney is a group of 70 islands just off the north - east tip of Scotland. Paul and Louise Hollinrake have lived in Orkney and run wildlife and other special interest holidays since 1986. Along with specialist knowledge of birds, archaeology, wildlife and history of the islands Paul and Louise are able to give visitors genuine insight into what it is like to live and work on Orkney.

Orkney Island Holidays are unique in that they operate from the owners’ island farm, Furrowend, on Shapinsay, 'the Green Isle', in the heart of Orkney. Their company logo, the black guillemot or 'tystie' was chosen because, like them, this northern bird stays in Orkney all year round.

High quality accommodation for guests was added to the original crofthouse. Care was taken to ensure all rooms have a superb view over the sea and islands. The main house is near to the sea on a 36 acre farm that has been managed for wildlife. A freshwater pool has been created next to a natural brackish lochan. Both pools and the sea are overlooked by a birdwatching hide about 50 metres from the house. Guests are able to take short walks around the farm and surrounding countryside before breakfast or in the long summer evenings.

This means that their knowledge and experience of Orkney is second to none. The Hollinrake's pride themselves on really 'knowing their stuff' and can provide more illuminating insights into life on Orkney. Paul is the RSPB Warden on Shapinsay where he manages the Mill Dam Wetland Reserve. Louise's speciality is the archaeology and history of Orkney. This 'Sense of Place' was highlighted in feedback from a very satisfied American client who said:

"You've done a fantastic job of thoroughly yet subtly introducing us to the gentle wonder of Orkney. You've given us a fine feel for your world!"

With Orkney Island Holidays clients can book an all-inclusive one week holiday exploring a fine blend of Orkney’s heritage. The holidays are a fun and informative mix of birdwatching, history, flowers, Orcadian people and scenery, peace and tranquillity, sun and wind. Paul and Louise always remember that their guests are on holiday and that the fun and enjoyment part of a trip is just as important as learning more about Orkney’s wonderful heritage. Having the required knowledge and ‘people skills’ mix has proved to be a key part of success for the company.

Orkney Island Holidays keep groups small, usually 6-10 people. Small groups guarantee more intimate wildlife encounters that are not always possible with larger groups. Other eco-tourism principles such as using local produce to make traditional dishes, employing local people and using local businesses all help Orkney Island Holidays to make a positive contribution to the Orkney economy and environment.

The Hollinrakes manage their farmland in a way that helps to ensure an abundance of wildlife.  Over the years they have taken advantage of various government-sponsored national habitat enhancement schemes.  They have planted sacrificial crops which attract various types of birds. Of one such crop, Phacelia, the Hollinrakes say "it is incredible for bumblebees and other insects because it has a high nectar content.  The insects in turn help the birds."  Other plants grown include oats, linseed, kale, mustard and quinoa, all of which produce seeds for farmland birds including skylarks, twite, linnet and snow buntings.  The farm is also visited by hen harriers who feed on the crops regularly.

As part of their support of conservation groups which promote a better understanding of Orkney’s natural heritage, wildlife sightings are passed on to the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds, Scottish Natural Heritage and the local Country wildlife recorder. These records are very helpful for conservation research.
