"Scotland... Towards Sustainable Tourism"

The Tourism and Environment Forum Statement
on Sustainable Tourism in Scotland, 2004

As part of the Tourism and Environment Forum's commitment to helping Scotland deliver a more sustainable tourism industry, a statement on sustainable tourism has been drawn up in consultation with Forum members and other industry leaders. The statement aims to guide agencies and tourism organisations to set targets which tackle social, environmental as well as economic issues.

The Statement can be downloaded at the bottom of this page.

As well as being a key driver of economic activity across Scotland, underpinning many remote rural and island communities, tourism has the potential to contribute significantly to a comprehensive, cross-sectoral approach to sustainable development in Scotland.

On Tuesday February 17th , the Tourism and Environment Forum (TEF) held a seminar in Perth to discuss the TEF Sustainable Tourism Statement for Scotland and encourage organisations and businesses to pin down the specific actions needed to work towards sustainable tourism objectives in Scotland.

Over 50 delegates focussed on sustainability - economic, social and environmental - as the only way forward for Scottish tourism. They discussed objectives that they felt must be adopted by tourism organisations and businesses if sustainable tourism is to be achieved in Scotland.

The statement can be downloaded at the bottom of this page.
